December 2020 Astrology Overview

Hi Friends,
What a year it’s been….here we are at last month of 2020 getting ready to embark on some major changes. Yes, more changes, we have lots of significant cosmic activity in December. A philosophical and spiritual Solar Eclipse, two major planets switching signs, Mars square Pluto, the Winter Solstice and a passionate Full Moon at the end of the month. 2020 was an interesting year for sure, but we will be going out of the year with a bang. And even though a lot went down over the past twelve months, there is a big doorway of opportunity that is opening up this month that will spill over into 2021.

Some of that opportunity I am referring to will come from Jupiter and Saturn that will move into the sign of Aquarius, a phenomenon that only happens every 20 years. It signals a new era some say “The Aquarian Age” no one really knows for sure. With these two gas giants in Aquarius over the next year and half it will certainly feeling like something new is in the air. Of course, that’s not all that’s happening in December Mercury moves into Sagittarius, kicking off the month with a serious mood boost. Then, the New Moon Solar Eclipse signals even more new beginnings and a feeling that the future looks brighter.

As we begin the last month of 2020 we are still feeling from the effects of the Full Moon Lunar Eclipse in Gemini. As I wrote in last month’s newsletter “Since this lunar cycle will be in the sign of communication and thought we will find ourselves needing to release old ideas and beliefs that no longer serve us. Mercury is the planet associated with Gemini and since Mercury is now visiting transformative Scorpio, This will therefore be an especially propitious time to reset our intentions and realign our thinking with the truth (which always sets us free). We will work together to release and transmute old emotional patterns as well, as core beliefs that are no longer productive for us will begin to fade away.”

So if we are going to release old outdated thoughts and ideas, December will offer us plenty of opportunity to replace these old beliefs and create new ones. We’ll get a plethora of help as we begin the month with Mercury entering Sagittarius on December 1st. There’s no beating around the bush when Mercury moves into this fiery sign. As the God of messages enters the sign of wisdom and philosophy, we all start thinking a little broader and smarter. Words will fly as Mercury’s winged feet combine with the prancing hooves of the Sagittarius intellect. For the next couple of weeks, refrains of “it’s the principle of the thing” will surely echo throughout the mountain tops.

This month’s New Moon on December 14th occurs in the sign of Sagittarius as well, and it’s a total Solar Eclipse. It awakens the adventurer in us all. This lunation offers us the opportunity to focus on goals that will increase our understanding and awareness, give us the courage to expand our horizons, and gain confidence and optimism from a broader perspective. With this potent Sagittarius energy, we can find ways to transcend the details of day-to-day life and nurture our faith, hope, and vision. Ideally, we’ve been refining our beliefs, supplementing them with facts, and we’re now getting ready to apply them.

This New Moon will be joined by the planet Mercury, so the spiritual meaning of this lunation relates to how we think and express ourselves. All forms of communication will be highlighted and ideas and conversations will be a bound. Our motivation should be quite high as well since Mars will be aligning favorably to this Solar Eclipse. There will be no shortage of energy and initiative to set new goals and to act on our plans with confidence. However, a harsh aspect to Neptune means we must be realistic about our endeavors and guard against deception and delusion.

We’ll have plenty of occasion to interact with others when Venus enters Sagittarius on December 16th. Venus is the planet that describes what makes us feel happy and content. When she moves into Sagittarius, we can expect to feel a more playful with more exuberant energy. Sagittarius is full of zest and excitement, so Venus here is in love with fun and games. A wide variety of playfulness is an absolute necessity during this transit. Sagittarius is a mutable fire sign, meaning that flexibility is combining with brilliant mental power. Like a spreading wildfire, it’s here, it’s there, and it’s everywhere. And Venus here thrives on chasing the flames as they jump from one tree to another.

Our social structures begin to change on December17th when Saturn re-enters Aquarius. Saturn first transited Aquarius from March 21st to July 1st earlier this year before retrograding back into Capricorn. Now in Aquarius until March 7, 2023, it’s a time for clearing out the deadwood, prioritizing quality over quantity, simplifying, and turning a critical eye to our social lives, friendships, causes, group associations, happiness goals, involvements, contributions, and associates. It’s a great time for technological advances that improve the community and help us connect more effectively. We seek more realistic plans and goals/dreams, and we have a good sense of both the past and future. Ideally, we’re able to put our egos aside to do what’s best for the collective during this period.

A few days later, on the 19th, Jupiter enters Aquarius as well! Jupiter and Saturn will meet shortly after these two major planetary movements. While Jupiter is in Aquarius we’re ready and willing to expand our minds, tolerance, and sense of fairness. We are at our best when we have freedom of choice, when we break a few rules, and when we think outside of the box. We’re seeking social reform and positive, humanitarian action. We value freedom, individuality, fellowship, and group goals and visions. Jupiter will align with Saturn exactly on December 21st, still in the first degree of the sign of Aquarius. Called the Great Conjunction, a Jupiter-Saturn alignment occurs only every twenty years or so, and far less frequently in the same sign.

Jupiter and Saturn will join forces three times over the course of about nine months. While both of these planets conjunct in Aquarius, we value practical accomplishment on human and technological levels. We might focus on restructuring now, and it’s a powerful prompt for new beginnings and taking the first steps to grow. Our vision empowers us, and it’s a practical one. With this transit, we avoid the waste of overestimation, although some underestimation is likely and a trade-off. While we can be working hard, we’re not working against the grain–for the most part, there’s support or our realistic confidence supports us. We’re inclined to focus these rebuilding and reforming energies and visions on our humanitarian impulses, contributions to society, social life, technological development, causes, and friendships.

Our minds turn to serious contemplation on December 20th when Mercury enters Capricorn. Mercury’s move into Capricorn signals a change of our thought process to one of getting down to business. Our minds begin to churn with ideas of how to make the world go around. And invariably, these ideas relate to finding the simplest, most practical way to do it. Capricorn is an earth sign and its energy is rather heavy, so you may find it hard for some of those ideas to actually sift through into words. They will though, if you give it some time. After all, there are so many pieces of the puzzle to fit together. And no one is better at coordinating the production of a major puzzle than Capricorn.

The following day, December 21st, marks the Winter Solstice in the North Hemisphere as the Sun moves into Capricorn. When the Sun moves through this cardinal earth sign, we feel the calming energy of the earth and the need to take care of business. During this month, we’ll feel the urge to get started on practical, heavy duty projects. This is a serious, no-frills kind of energy. A sense of being responsible and reliable fills the air. We become cautious and keenly aware of the need for safety and security. The sign of Capricorn relates to the process of managing things — businesses, projects, and people. It’s the director, putting all the pieces in the right places. The payoff is big if you do it right.

On December 23rd our tempers may be on edge thanks to an exact Mars square Pluto. When these two heavy weights are entangled they create a strong desire to assert our dominance and achieve a position of power. We feel extremely restless during this transit with a tremendous drive and ambition to push forward. Although we’ll have this tremendous energy to draw on, the assertiveness of the Mars square Pluto energy can sometimes turn to aggressiveness if our ambitions are blocked, or our goals and beliefs are challenged by others. There may be a tendency to bottle up any anger and resentment, which would only result in an outburst of destructive rage.

To avoid potential temper tantrums, we will have to moderate this intense energy by focusing on continuous hard work towards our ambitious goals. This should not be too much of a challenge given the strong work ethic and determination that will be in the air during this aspect. However, there is still the possibility of our rise to power resulting in aggressive actions from others. I can see this taking place in the United States because of the uncertain election results. The key to gaining the upper hand is to stay focused on our own goals. Resist the urge to retaliate or undermine your enemies. Unfortunately, I see a major possibly of civil unrest due to the elections.

Passions will certainly be running high on December 29th as we end 2020 with a Full Moon in Cancer. Since the US was born under the sign of Cancer something significant will take place in the US. On a personal level we may turn to family and loved ones. We may find ourselves question our security, home life, family issues, country (if you live in the US) and emotions maybe on edge. Something new that suddenly is revealed is possible during this lunation because surprising Uranus will be making a connection to this Full Moon.
